Researchers compared a traditional preseason program with an experimental one combining plyometric exercises and targeted cardio training in female volleyball players aged 18-20, across two consecutive seasons. The experimental program produced notably better functional fitness by the end of the preparatory period, including ~8% better endurance and metabolic capacity, 11-16% better speed and speed-strength endurance, 12-14% higher anaerobic power, 10% higher VO2max, and a 12% higher overall fitness score.
Takeaway: Combine plyometric work with structured cardio training during the preseason to boost both anaerobic power and aerobic capacity.
Abstract (source)

The article investigates the influence of the experimental training program on the functional fitness indicators of female volleyball players aged 18โ€“20 years at the stage of preparation for higher sports achievements. A comparative analysis of the

Results: of the application of the traditional and author's programs during two consecutive competitive seasons was conducted. The experimental program involved the complex use of plyometric exercises and special cardio training tools. It was established that at the end of the preparatory period, the athletes of the Orbita-ZNU team demonstrated significantly higher functional fitness indicators compared to the traditional training system. An improvement in overall endurance and metabolic capacity by 8%, speed and speed-strength endurance by 11โ€“16%, anaerobic power and capacity by 12โ€“14%, maximum oxygen consumption by 10%, physical performance by 15%, energy efficiency and reserve capabilities by 21โ€“24%, and the integral level of functional fitness by 12% were recorded. The

results obtained confirmed the effectiveness and practical feasibility of using the author's program in the training of qualified volleyball players.
