The Association Between Sleep Quality, Training Load and Injury Risk in Athletes
Antoni Błaszkiewicz · Quality in Sport · 2026
Sleep is an essential component of athletic recovery, yet inadequate sleep is common among athletes and may influence both performance and injury risk. Training load also plays an important role, particularly when high workloads are combined with insufficient recovery. This article examines the relationship between sleep quality, training load, and injury risk in athletes. Current evidence suggests that poor sleep is associated with impaired recovery, reduced physical and cognitive performance, and a higher likelihood of musculoskeletal injury. Excessive or rapidly increasing training loads may further increase this risk when recovery is inadequate. However, the relationship is complex and influenced by individual, psychological, and environmental factors. Monitoring sleep and training load may therefore help coaches, athletes, and medical staff identify periods of increased risk and improve recovery strategies. Further prospective research is needed to establish clearer causal relationships.
