Introduction: In modern soccer, maximal aerobic speed is a key determinant of performance because it supports repeated high-intensity efforts and efficient recovery during play. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been widely used to improve aerobic fitness in soccer players.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of HIIT-based training units on maximal aerobic speed in university soccer players.
Methods: An experimental
Design: with pre- and post-testing was adopted. The sample consisted of 22 university soccer players selected purposively and equally assigned to two groups: a control group (n = 11), which followed the usual training program, and an experimental group (n = 11), which completed a HIIT-based training program integrated into regular practice. Maximal aerobic speed was assessed using the 20-m multistage shuttle run test. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests.
Results: The
Findings: revealed statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-tests in the experimental group in favor of the post-test, with the mean increasing from 15.20 ± 0.84 to 17.30 ± 0.71 (p = 0.008). Significant differences were also found in the control group, but the improvement was limited, as the mean increased from 15.00 ± 0.78 to 15.25 ± 0.32 (p = 0.005). Post-test comparison showed the superiority of the experimental group, with a very large effect size (d = 3.72).
Conclusions: HIIT appears to be an effective
Method: for improving maximal aerobic speed in university soccer players and may be recommended as part of soccer training programs. Article history: Received 2026 April 04; Revised 2026 June10; Accepted 2026 June 15; Available online 2026 September 30; Available print 2026 September 30
