Examining Sex-Based Inequities in Pediatric Sports Medicine Research: A Systematic Review.

Researchers manually reviewed 409 studies of youth athletes published from 2020 to 2024 in 12 leading sports medicine journals to see how often male versus female athletes were included. About 30% of studies enrolled only males versus 10% only females, and participants were a median of 61% male and 39% female, with the imbalance being even larger in single-sport studies and higher-quality study designs.
Takeaway: Interpret youth sports medicine guidance cautiously for female athletes, since most of the underlying research skews male.
